Whale Watching in Uvita, Costa Rica
Uvita is one of the best whale-watching destinations on Earth for a simple reason: it's one of the very few places visited by humpback whales from both hemispheres, giving the coast whales for roughly eight months of the year. The marine park below Villa Ballena is even named for them — Marino Ballena, "whale marine" park.
The two seasons
July–November: the main event. Southern-hemisphere humpbacks swim thousands of miles from Antarctic waters to breed and calve in Uvita's warm, protected bay. August and September are the peak months, with near-daily sightings and frequent mother-and-calf pairs — and Uvita's annual Whale & Dolphin Festival lands in early September.
December–March: the second season, when northern-hemisphere humpbacks arrive from Alaska and California. The migration is smaller, but January and February reliably deliver sightings — and it overlaps perfectly with dry-season beach weather.
Taking a tour
Whales rarely pass close enough to see well from shore, so a boat tour from Marino Ballena National Park is the way to do it. Tours typically run about three hours, cost roughly $60–80 per person, and often include dolphins, sea turtles and a pass by the coastal caves and islets. Book a morning departure — seas are calmer, viewing is better and you'll beat the heat. In peak weeks, reserve a day or two ahead.
Tips from the villa
Bring sun protection and a light rain layer in green season; sightings are wild-animal luck, so give yourself two chances if whales are the reason for your trip. And in season, keep an eye on the horizon from the pool — the bay below Villa Ballena is exactly where they come.
Time your stay
For the highest odds, book August or September; for whales plus guaranteed sun, aim for January or February. Whale-season weeks at the villa go early — check the calendar as soon as your dates firm up.
